The Retinal Consultants is one of the premier retinal subspecialty groups in the country, providing outstanding retinal care for the Northern California Valley for over 40 years. The practice was established in 1975 by the first fellowship-trained retina specialist in Sacramento, Neil Kelly MD. As his practice grew, Dr. Kelly recruited another retina specialist, Jim Wells MD, to join him in 1978. In 1982, Tom Salzano MD, opened the second retina-only practice in Sacramento in the northern part of the city. Both practices merged in 1985 upon the recruitment of Robert Wendel MD, the fourth retinal surgeon in the group. Encouraged by the local community, the practice opened its first office outside of Sacramento in 1987, located in Stockton. With the arrival of Arun Patel MD in 1989, we continued to thrive and grow. The Retinal Consultants became internationally recognized as a leader and innovator in vitreoretinal surgery in 1991 with the landmark publication by Drs. Kelly and Wendel that described the first successful surgical treatment of idiopathic macular holes.1 Their publication was so influential that it ranked number 24 in a review of the top 100 most frequently cited articles in ophthalmology journals from 1975 to 2006.2
Drs. Kelly, Wells, and Salzano have since retired, but the group has grown to eleven doctors with the addition of Joel Pearlman MD PhD, J. Brian Reed MD, Robert Equi MD, Tony Tsai MD, Margaret Chang MD MS, and David Telander MD PhD, David Cupp MD, Carlos Medina MD, and Sarju Patel MD MPH MSc. With these additions, we have expanded to include vitreoretinal surgeons who are also fellowship trained in the subspecialties of ocular oncology and uveitis. We have also expanded geographically to serve much of Northern California, with eleven offices in 2018 and more locations planned.
As a group of highly specialized eye surgeons, we are devoted to providing the highest level of care for all types of vitreoretinal illnesses. All of our doctors are board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and are fellowship-trained members of the American Society of Retina Specialists.
In addition to providing expert care for more common disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular holes and age-related macular degeneration, we provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and therapy for many complex vitreoretinal conditions. We have an active clinical trials division and have been key contributors to many of the landmark multicenter clinical trials in retina in the last decade. Our practice is continually evolving to provide the latest treatments available and conducting research to develop the therapies of the future.
